LFChistory.net — Preserving Liverpool FC's History

LFChistory.net is an independent website dedicated to documenting the history of Liverpool Football Club, from its foundation in 1892 to the present day. Founded in 2002 by two Icelandic Liverpool supporters, Arnie Baldursson (editor, pictured left) and Gudmundur Magnusson (webmaster, pictured right), the site was created to offer a different perspective on the club’s history, built on detailed statistics, historical research, articles and exclusive interviews.

Having spent four years in similar roles on Liverpool's official Icelandic supporters' club website, Arnie and Gudmundur wanted to create something of their own: an accessible, research-driven resource focused on Liverpool's history rather than an online forum.

The domain LFChistory.net was registered in May 2002, marking the beginning of 16 months of planning, research and design. The original intention was to cover the Bill Shankly era from 1959 onwards, gradually adding the club's earlier history as the site developed. LFChistory.net was launched on 8 September 2003.

By 7 October 2004, the site's historical records had been extended back to 1892. LFChistory.net had achieved its original ambition of documenting Liverpool's official matches and friendlies, including line-ups, goalscorers and profiles of every player who had appeared on a Liverpool teamsheet since the club's formation.

Researching Liverpool's history

Accurate historical records have always been at the heart of LFChistory.net. The pioneering work of Brian Pead made a significant contribution to documenting Liverpool's statistics and provided an important foundation for subsequent research into the club's history.

However, records do not always agree. Particularly in the club's early decades, goalscorers and appearance totals could vary between published sources, and there was no single comprehensive official record of Football League goalscorers to resolve every discrepancy.

Rather than accepting existing figures without question, Arnie and Gudmundur examined the available evidence and challenged records where the documentation warranted it. This included comparing contemporary newspaper reports from publications such as the Liverpool Echo, Daily Post, Mercury and Courier, assessing the evidence and reaching conclusions based on the most convincing available sources.

Newspaper reports, like other sources, are not infallible. The aim has always been to establish the most accurate record possible, acknowledge uncertainty where necessary, and continue improving the historical record as further evidence becomes available.

This commitment to research and accuracy remains central to LFChistory.net.

From a hobby to a recognised historical resource

What began as a hobby in 2002 has grown into an essential resource for Liverpool supporters, researchers, authors and journalists around the world. Major news organisations and sports media regularly use LFChistory.net's statistics and historical research in their coverage of Liverpool Football Club.

A significant milestone came in 2009, when LFChistory.net entered into an agreement with Liverpool Football Club concerning the use of our statistical records. It was a proud moment for us and a great recognition of the work that had gone into building the site's database.

Liverpool FC subsequently developed and maintained its own in-house statistical records, and the arrangement with LFChistory.net is no longer current. Nevertheless, the 2009 agreement remains an important part of our story.

The people behind LFChistory.net

The site's development and continued existence owe much to the knowledge, dedication and generosity of people who have shared their research, records and memories with us. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the project over the years, including the following.

Maciej Konofol

Maciej has been our social media editor since September 2018. His dedication has helped increase LFChistory.net's presence and following on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, introducing the site to a wider audience.

Graeme Riley

Graeme supplied line-ups and goalscorers for opposing teams, helping us build a more complete record of Liverpool's matches. A regular visitor to Anfield until he moved away from the area in the early 1990s, Graeme's passion for Liverpool is matched by his enthusiasm for football statistics.

Adrian Killen

Adrian has compiled a comprehensive record of Liverpool matches dating from 1946 onwards. His collection includes carefully assembled scrapbooks containing contemporary reports and other material, some of which he has shared with LFChistory.net. From 2005 to 2011, he also worked as a tour guide at Anfield.

Kjell Hansen

Kjell is the author of Dicky Sam's – Liverpool FC in Blue and White, which documents the club's early years, and was the exceptional editor of PlayUpLiverpool.com, now owned by LFChistory.net. He has generously shared rare newspaper articles, statistics and other historical information that have enriched our archive.

John Shimmin

John has contributed a wealth of information about Liverpool FC, including press cuttings, match reports and statistical records. His contributions have helped broaden and strengthen our historical archive, for which we are extremely grateful.

Brian Duffy

Brian has shared facts, figures and reports from many Liverpool matches he attended in person. Among his memories is Liverpool's 6–2 victory over Ipswich Town on Christmas Day 1954, when he watched from the Boys' Pen high in the corner of the Kop, aged 14.

Recalling the frost or light covering of snow on the pitch and the early 11.15 kick-off, Brian described a remarkable performance during Liverpool's first season of eight in the old Second Division. His first-hand memories provide a valuable personal perspective on the club's past.

Eric Doig

Eric was the co-author of Essential History of Liverpool and the grandson of Ned Doig, Liverpool's first international goalkeeper. A lifelong Liverpool supporter and season-ticket holder from the early 1960s, he was also a member of the Association of Football Statisticians.

After retiring as a medical scientist in 1990, Eric devoted much of his spare time to researching Liverpool FC's history and statistics. He contacted us soon after LFChistory.net went online and proved invaluable in sharing his own research and helping improve the accuracy of our records. We remember his contribution with gratitude. May he rest in peace.

Chris Wood

Chris joined the LFChistory.net team in 2004 and remained an active contributor until 2015. He devoted considerable time to checking and rechecking facts, writing player profiles and contributing other articles to the site.

Chris attended his first match at Anfield in 1969 and subsequently watched Liverpool play live more than 1,000 times. His dedication to documenting the club's history and ensuring the accuracy of our records left a lasting contribution to the project. We remember him with gratitude. May he rest in peace.

Still documenting Liverpool's story

What started as a project between two Liverpool supporters in Iceland has become a lifelong commitment to documenting the club's history. We're proud of what LFChistory.net has grown into, grateful to everyone who has helped us along the way, and conscious that there is always more to discover.

As long as there are stories to uncover, records to examine and details worth getting right, we'll keep adding to Liverpool's history.
