Daniel Kirkwood, the beneficiary, was a Liverpool Caledonians player who had broken a leg badly during a match against South Shore the previous November.
Liverpool Caledonians, who played at Woodcroft Park, started off this season in the Lancashire League but resigned on the 22nd of December with their record expunged. Liverpool had not played the Caledonians at the time they resigned. But interestingly, Liverpool were knocked out of the F.A. cup by Northwich Victoria in November, who then went on to meet (and beat) Liverpool Caledonians 3-2 in the next qualifying round. This turned out to be the Caledonians' final match before the club resigned from the Lancashire League.
