Lancashire Senior Cup was known as Lancashire Section Subsidiary Competition that season.
Blackpool director Albert Hargreaves, a qualified referee, unwisely became involved in an argument about the standard of refereeing at this match . Mister Alderston was considered by many watching to have favoured the away team, especially after he denied Blackpool what seemed to be a clear penalty in the closing minutes. At the end of the game, Mister Alderston had to be escorted from the pitch by police officers to save him from the wrath of home fans who were anxious to ‘have a word with him’ or worse. A large and unhappy crowd hung around outside the stadium and had to be asked to disperse by the club’s directors. Arthur Hargreaves, however, was overheard making ‘indiscreet remarks’ about the referee’s performance and was subsequently cautioned for that by the Lancashire County Football Association. Alderston was also reprimanded for not originally reporting the incident (the angry crowd on the pitch and the lynch-mob that subsequently waited for him outside). Blackpool themselves were cleared of any wrongdoing because the incident was not seen to be too serious, not serious enough to punish anyway.
