Testimonial

Anfield | Saturday 4 September 2010

Liverpool 4 - 1 Everton

Notes

  • Testimonial for: Jamie Carragher
  • Despite being on international duty, Steven Gerrard was given permission by England manager Fabio Capello to make a brief appearance in this match. Gerrard started but was replaced by Danny Murphy after ten minutes.

Bizarrely Jamie Carragher scored for both teams in his own testimonial match. Having scored a penalty for Liverpool just before half-time, he then gave one away shortly after Joe Cole had increased Liverpool's lead to 3-0. With Everton player Yakubu about to take the responsibility, Carragher strode into the penalty-area and drilled the ball past Brad Jones' left hand and then trotted to the touchline to be immediately substituted. Referee Mark Halsey pointed to the centre-circle, thereby awarding the goal. Technically an own-goal it could be argued but not one that will go down in the record-books.

Liverpool team : Jerzy Dudek (Brad Jones), Steve Finnan (Andre Wisdom (Conor Coady)), Jamie Carragher (John Flanagan), Stephen Wright (Daniel Ayala), Stephen Warnock (Paul Konchesky); Joe Cole (David Thompson (Raheem Sterling)), Steven Gerrard (Danny Murphy (Jonjo Shelvey(Jason McAteer))), Jay Spearing (Gary McAllister), Luis GarcĂa (Ryan Babel); Michael Owen (Nathan Eccleston (Suso)), Emile Heskey (Amoo (Robinson))
