Player Profile

Dubliner Brian Mooney made his first appearance for the club when he substituted Jim Beglin during the club's 3-2 League Cup victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on 7 October 1986. Although registered as a Liverpool player since the 1983/84 season, it was clear that his chances of breaking through at Anfield were extremely slight given the club's continued run of success through the whole of the 1980's. Mooney had a loan spell at Wrexham in 1985/86 before joining Preston after a month's loan at Deepdale in November 1987. He spent three seasons at Deepdale where he played 128 games for the Lancashire club, scoring 20 goals, which turned out to be the best spell of his career being voted Preston's Player of the Year in the 1988/89 season. "The Moon Man" as he was called at Preston is considered a legend in those parts.
