Player Profile
Newby came to Liverpool only nine years of age. A quick, though slightly-built striker, he won the FA youth cup with his fellow teammates Jamie Carragher, David Thompson and Michael Owen in 1996. After featuring for roughly 30 minutes in four substitute appearances in the 1999/00 season and having been loaned out to four clubs Newby signed for Bury in March 2001. He played 125 games for the Shakers and scored 24 goals while Bury were relegated into Third Division in his second season. Newby was sold to Huddersfield, but rejoined Bury a year later. He struggled with injuries in his second spell at Bury and was released in the 2005/06 season. Newby joined Morecambe in 2007/08 in the club's first season in the Football League and scored six goals in 32 League matches but was surprisingly released the following summer despite being the club's joint top-scorer. Newby finally settled at Colwyn Bay in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. At the end of the 2010/11 season the Seagulls were promoted via the play-offs into the Conference North. When manager Dave Challinor left his post for AFC Fylde in November 2011 Newby took over as the club's player-manager, serving until he was sacked on New Years' Day 2013.
