Player Profile

Scunthorpe-born White arrived at Anfield in November 1955 after having played 133 League matches for his hometown club. Liverpool manager Don Welsh and two club directors arrived in Scunthorpe on 10 November 1955 and took manager Bill Corkhill away from a snooker game, and offered him £8,000 for White, the biggest fee in the club’s history, on the spot. White replaced regular centre-half Laurie Hughes at Barnsley on 10 March 1956 and made a further seven appearances for Liverpool before the end of that season. But Hughes missed only one League match in 1956/57 so it wasn't until the following season that White became a regular in the side. He only missed two matches over the next four League seasons. Ron Yeats arrived in 1961 and took over as captain from White, who had only been leading Liverpool out for one season. That effectively ended White's career as a Liverpool player although he still managed to make further 25 appearances as right-back before leaving Liverpool as second division champion.
