Player Profile

Blanthorne was secured from neighbours Birkenhead in November 1905 and finished as top-scorer of Liverpool’s reserves with 22 goals in the 1905/06 season. After netting another 17 goals in the following season Blanthorne finally got his chance with the first team, but his two League appearances at the end of 1906/07 against Bristol City and Middlesbrough proved to be his only appearances for the seniors. The chief complaint about him at Liverpool was that he lacked “speed and dash”. Blanthorne looked forward to his challenge at Newcastle, but sadly broke his leg in the opening game of the 1908/09 season which proved detrimental to the rest of his career. He was out for a season and a half and having recovered his fitness with Newcastle’s reserves he joined Hartlepools United in January 1911.
