Player Profile

Left-half Browning made his Reds' debut towards the end of the 1934/35 season, playing in three of the last four league fixtures of that campaign. But due to the consistency of regular half-back Jimmy McDougall, he was only picked six times in 1935/36 and that was the highest number of appearances he made for the club during any one season. His father, John senior, was a Scottish international who scored 63 goals in 217 games for Celtic between 1911 and 1919. His reputation suffered a bitter blow when in 1924 he and ex-Rangers player, Archie Kyle, were found guilty of attempting to bribe Bo'Ness player Peter Brown. John received 60 days hard labour for this misdemeanour. John Jr. moved to Southern League‘s Gillingham in August 1939. He moved to Dumbarton in November at a time when World War Two had derailed the British game. As well as featuring for Dumbarton he worked for the government.
