Player Profile

An accomplished cricketer and boxer and son of a professional runner Carr utilised his physical strength and electrifying pace on the left wing to the best of his ability. The South African made 31 first division appearances for Liverpool in the middle of the 1930's but only had one really extended run in the first team when he featured in 23 of 28 games in the 1935/36 season. He replaced Alf Hanson on 7 September 1935 when Everton visited Anfield and created the first two goals for Liverpool who went on to beat Everton 6-0 which is still Reds' biggest win over their blue rivals. Imagine Carr's shock when four days later Manchester City beat Liverpool with the same scoreline! He scored in the following game when Liverpool beat Grimsby 7-2. Clearly, no regular results in those days! Carr enjoyed being a firm fixture in the side for the first time in his Liverpool career with his compatriot Berry Niewenhuys on the opposite wing. They had arrived together from South Africa in September 1933 after being spotted by the father of South African Arthur Riley. Arthur had taken the same route eight years earlier and was still Liverpool's number one.

The highlight of Carr's post-Liverpool career was winning the third division south championship with Newport County in the 1938/39 season, having spent the previous season at South Liverpool where he netted 35 times. Carr played 42 games and scored eight goals in his only season at Bristol Rovers after the resumption of League football after World War II before going on a free transfer to Merthyr Tydfil in July 1947. Carr became a businessman in London and died in Greenwich on 28 April 1983, aged 73.
