Player Profile
Dabbs joined Liverpool on the recommendation of former stalwart at the club, Harry Chambers, who had been playing with Dabbs at Oakengates. 'Put him straight into the team, he's that good,' Chambers claimed. Although Dabbs made the line-up for the opening day of the 1933/34 season, that appearance at Wolverhampton was the defender's only one of the league campaign and he had to wait until April 1935 before being selected again. It wasn't until the 1936/37 season that Dabbs received an extended run in the side, at left-back, figuring in 32 of the last 36 matches with former England captain, Ernie Blenkinsop, unavailable through injury. Dabbs played in six consecutive first division fixtures early in the 1937/38 season but after he conceded an unnecessary penalty in the home derby with Everton on 2 October 1937 he was not chosen again. Dabbs joined Watford in Third Division South in the summer of 1938. Ben Dabbs' mother and England's captain Billy Wright's grandmother were sisters.
