Player Profile

Centre-half amateur Dines featured just once for Liverpool in the third match of the 1912/13 season away to Chelsea which Liverpool won 2-1. The Staffordshire Sentinel reported on his move on 24 August 1912: "The news that Joe Dines, the English amateur international footballer, has signed forms for Liverpool caused some dismay out Ilford way, as he had been one of the mainstays of the Ilford FC for some years. Dines will not altogether desert his old club." Dines played 27 games for England's amateur side and won a football gold medal at the 1912 Olympic games. He played in all three of Great Britain's games in Stockholm where the team beat Hungary 7-0 and Finland 4-0 before conquering Denmark 4-2 in the final on 4 July 1912. He was described as "the smiling footballer", a thoughtful young man, a commanding half-back and "master of the art of dribbling." Joseph Dines was a Second Lieutenant in The King's Liverpool Regiment and was killed in Pas de Calais on 27 September 1918. He is buried in the Grand Ravine British Cemetery in Havrincourt, France.
