Kinghorn played in Liverpool's forward-line during the last full season before the outbreak of World War II. The club had an extremely settled side at the time, with no fewer than ten players making at least 30 league appearances during that 1938/39 season. Kinghorn shared the left wing for most of the season with Harman van den Berg. Kinghorn was dropped after only three matches in September but reclaimed his spot in November when van den Berg suffered a cartilage injury. Kinghorn made a total of 19 appearances that campaign compared to van den Berg's 16.
