A two-footed elegant player who played either at right or left-back. London-born Lock had played over 200 times for Charlton Athletic when he signed for Liverpool on Christmas Day 1953 along with teammate John Evans. It was an attempt to bolster an increasingly fragile defence as the club nose-dived towards relegation to the Second Division. Lock’s arrival came too late to stop that slide, but at least he had the satisfaction of helping his colleagues to keep a clean sheet on his debut against West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on Boxing Day, the goalless draw halting a run of three successive defeats in which fifteen goals had been conceded! Lock made the line-up at full-back for the first 18 matches of the following season but then lost his place along with fellow full-back Tom McNulty to Ronnie Moran and Ray Lambert. Liverpool attempted unsuccessfully as it turned out to make an immediate return to the top division and Lock was transferred to Watford in the Third Division in the summer of 1955.
