Player Profile

The Scotsman started the 1897/98 season on the right wing and played in the opening 16 fixtures before losing his place to Fred Geary. He only made two more appearances before the end of the season. He featured in three games in the 1898/99 season and was berated for "slow movements and aimless passing" in a 2-1 win over Everton in September 1898. The "rasping shots" of which Marshall was capable of were sadly missing. Marshall scored twice for Liverpool, both goals coming in a 4-2 home win over Derby County on 23 October 1897. Liverpool had been 2-0 up at half-time but with the scores at 3-2 Marshall put the result beyond any doubt near the end with a beautiful header. Marshall moved south to Portsmouth where he was a firm fixture for a few years winning the Southern league in 1901/02.
