McNaughton was a goalkeeper who made just a single appearance in Liverpool's first eleven. He replaced the legendary Elisha Scott in the Anfield derby with Everton on 23 October 1920 and kept a clean sheet as the Reds won 1-0 with the winner coming 10 minutes before half-time from Dick Forshaw.
