Player Profile
5 ft. 5 ins. (165 cm.) inside-forward Orr was a huge success at Newcastle since joining the Tyneside club in May 1901, winning the League Championship in 1905 and 1907, playing 180 games and scoring 69 goals. Orr scored on his Liverpool debut at Aston Villa but it was only a consolation in a heavy 5-1 defeat. He scored four more times in the six remaining fixtures of that 1907/08 season. A year later he was the club's top-scorer with 20 from 33 League games, eight goals more than second-highest scorer, Joe Hewitt. However, the rest of the team didn't follow suit and Liverpool were close to relegation. In fact, Orr almost single-handedly dragged Liverpool out of trouble. Liverpool and Bury were equal on 33 points in fifteenth place when they faced each other in the penultimate game of the season. Orr let fly with “one of his old-time shots” in sixth minute, but Bury went 2-1 up and the Second Division was looming. Orr, however, scored the last goal one minute before the interval. Liverpool needed a point in their last game of the season to avoid relegation. Opponents Newcastle had already secured the Championship. In a scrappy game at St. James' Orr was again Liverpool’s hero, scoring the only goal of the game in the seventy-eighth minute.
In the following season Orr only managed five League goals in 31 games but Liverpool were stronger collectively and finished runners-up. Orr played in the majority of mid-table Liverpool's first division fixtures in 1910/11 and started as a regular in the following season which proved to be his last for Liverpool. He injured ligaments in his right leg in the Merseyside derby on 16 September 1911 and didn't feature again until six weeks later. He then faded out of the picture and his final appearance for the club came at Sheffield United in the middle of December 1911. Two months later he returned to his native Scotland with Raith Rovers.
