Liverpool came to watch Chesterfield's goalscoring machine Jimmy Cookson, who scored 256 goals in 292 League matches, but left more impressed by Oxley whose skills set up a number of chances for his centre-forward. It was a big step for Oxley to go from Third Division North to the First Division but the outside-right went straight into Liverpool's first team and kept his place throughout the 1925/26 season. He played in 31 consecutive matches until the season ended, scoring six times, including one in a 3-3 draw with Everton. Oxley also represented Liverpool in three FA Cup ties that year, a run ended by Fulham in the fourth round after it had taken a replay to dispose of Southampton in round three. Following Dick Edmed's arrival in the summer of 1926 Oxley was firmly stuck in the reserves for the next two seasons before departing for Southend United in Third Division South in 1928.
