Player Profile

Forward Henry or "Harry" Race as he was more commonly known made a dramatic debut at Derby on 15 February 1928, when the Reds made a great fightback after being 2-0 down at the break. His strike early in the second half followed by two from Dick Edmed turned a probable defeat into an unlikely victory. Race's only other goal in his 11 first division appearances at the end of that 1927/28 season came in the club's next away fixture, at Arsenal. It was Liverpool's third of the day but Arsenal scored six themselves! Race, who was described as fast and clever on the ball, was in and out of the team during the next two years but his goals-per-game ratio was very respectable. In August 1930 he was purchased by first division Manchester City for no less than £3,000, a substantial fee at the time. However, Race only played eleven games in three seasons for City, scoring three goals. He was transferred to Nottingham Forest on 26 June 1933 and had three successful years at City Ground in the Second Division.

Race was killed in World War II at El Alamein in Egypt on 24 October 1942 while serving as a Corporal for Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
