Player Profile

Ross was Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper in the club's only season in the Lancashire league. The majority of the regulars in the side had the prefix "Mc" in front of their names so the team was known as "The team of Macs". The Liverpool Echo noted at the time that "it was amusing to hear Ross frequently greeted by humourously-inclined spectators behind the goal with cries of 'Play up, MacRoss'." Unfortunately for Ross he was badly injured in a Lancashire Cup tie against neighbours Bootle on 11 March 1893 and it was noted in the newspapers at the time: "Ross was again an absentee, being an inmate at Stanley hospital till Friday, and it is feared he has received a permanent injury." Ross certainly didn't play for Liverpool again and returned to Scotland where he resumed his career. He played a few matches for Cambuslang in the 1893/94 season before signing for Third Lanark in May 1894. He was mostly a reserve goalkeeper at Lanark before moving in the summer of 1898 to Clyde who signed as well Liverpool 'keeper, Willie Donnelly. Ross emigrated to Australia in 1910 and died in 1924 in South Brisbane, Queensland, from Hodgkins disease and heart failure, aged 55.
