Player Profile

Shield's solitary first-team selection for the club came when he deputised for regular left-half Jimmy McDougall in a first division fixture at Deepdale, Preston on 11 April 1936. The Liverpool Echo reported on his inclusion as Shield was an amateur: "Liverpool finding V. Wright, McDougall and Phil Taylor injured, have done a remarkable thing. They have brought in John Shield, the schoolmaster and amateur (from Bishop Auckland) to make his debut a Preston - their first amateur since the days of Uren. Shield has player for the Liverpool Reserve and has been an outstanding success.
