Player Profile

Steel made his debut at right-back six days before Christmas 1931 in a 1-1 home draw with Derby County. He only missed one League fixture for the rest of the season, was the club’s only ‘ever-present’ a year later and missed three games in 1933/34. He lost his place following the arrival of England International Tom Cooper in the 1934/35 season. Evidently his transfer to first division Birmingham City took a number of people by surprise as he had been according to Liverpool’s programme: “a popular man here, a model professional and a most consistent performer.” Steel was manager of Airdrie in his native Scotland from 1954-1963.
