Player Profile

Stott was only at Anfield for one season in 1893/94, but distinguished himself by being the club's top-scorer that year, netting 14 times in just 17 appearances as the club was promoted to the top division at the first time of asking. He played in 13 of the first 14 League games but only made a further three appearances during the second half of the season. The highlight was a hat-trick in the 6-0 trouncing of Middlesbrough Ironopolis at Anfield in October 1893. Stott was Newcastle United's captain from 1896-1898. The club gained promotion from the Second Division at the end of his captaincy. He made 125 appearances for the Magpies in four years, earning the reputation of being a tough customer on the field. In 1896 he was censured by the Newcastle Board for "continual fouling of his opponent". Sadly he contracted a brain tumour and died in a "lunatic asylum" (as a mental institution was so crudely named in those days) on 8 October 1908.
