Wright's breakthrough was in the 1930/31 season when he made 15 league appearances, most of them as a replacement for Jimmy Smith, and scored six times. Wright made a terrific start to the 1931/32 season when he scored five times in the first four games and finished up with 13, going one better in the following campaign. He figured in nine of the first ten league matches in the 1933/34 season, but lost his place and finished his Liverpool career at home to Derby County on the last day of March 1934. It was his hundredth first-team appearance, in which he had hit the net 35 times.
