Player Profile
Miller was an inside-forward who had played for several Scottish clubs before signing for Liverpool in February 1912 He quickly established himself and helped the club reach their first FA Cup final in 1914, in a season he scored 20 goals in 40 games. All the good deeds he did at Liverpool are though overshadowed by the fact that Miller along with three Liverpool players; Thomas Fairfoul, Bob Pursell and Jackie Sheldon and three United players was found guilty of fixing a game between Liverpool and Manchester United on Good Friday 1915. For his service to his country in the war Miller's life ban from the game was lifted and he was still a Liverpool player after League football resumed. Miller scored 13 goals in 25 games in the 1919/20 season as Liverpool finished fourth. He was described as having "a rare burst of speed and a good shot and knows how to hustle the defenders" and that he was "a rare stamp of forward, intelligent, quick on his toes and skilful in passing and finishing."
Miller started the following season well by scoring three goals in his first two games, but funnily enough, considering the Good Friday scandal, moved to Manchester United in September 1920. Miller scored eight goals in 27 appearances in his only season at United before moving to his native Scotland in July 1921 to play for Hearts who signed him for a club-record fee. The 31-year-old was however past his best and was offloaded to Southern league's Torquay United in the 1922/23 season.
